MAGDALEN COLLEGE
Pronounced Maudlin. Founded in 1458 by William Waynefleet. Possibly the most beautiful of the colleges with large grounds that include river walks and a Deer Park. The splendid bell tower dates from around 1500. Each May Day morning the choir sings hymns from the top of the tower. The Cloister Quad, which was built around 1470 has buttresses adorned with amusing grotesque figures.
BODLEAN LIBRARY
The oldest library in the world. It has over three million books and recieves a copy of each new one printed. Named after Sir Thomas Bodley who donated his large collection of books in 1598. The magnificent vaulted ceiling, adorned with pendant bosses in the adjoining Divinity School is well worth seeing.
ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM
One of Europes's oldest and Britain's finest museums. Exhibits range from Egyptian sculpture to Michaelangelos drawings. Don't miss the 9th century King Alfred's jewel, and the antiquities of Knossos in Crete. Famous paintings include Uccello's "Hunt in the Forest" and Pissaro's "Portrait of Jeanne.
